Andy Murray was left angered by a BBC Scotland reporter on Tuesday after he suggested the British tennis legend should retire from the sport.

Murray plays with a metal hip after career-saving surgery and enjoyed a resurgent 2023 – working his way back inside the world top 50, reaching the final of the Qatar Open on the ATP Tour and registering three titles on the Challenger Tour.

The 36-year-old has endured a poor run, though, producing one win across his last nine matches – including a first-round Australian Open exit two weeks ago.

Speaking after his early Melbourne exit, Murray admitted that he may have played the Grand Slam event for the last time and hinted he might hang up his racket.

But BBC Scotland reporter Kheredine Idessane frustrated the two-time Wimbledon champion on Tuesday with a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘It’s been an incredible journey by a remarkable man,’ he said. ‘And such a privilege to bear witness to large parts of it.

‘All good things come to an end, of course. So when should @andy_murray call time on his extraordinary career?’

Murray, clearly upset by the post and accompanying article, responded: ‘Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour.

‘I’m in a terrible moment right now I’ll give you that. Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now.

‘But I’m not most people and my mind works differently. I won’t quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I’m capable of.’
